At night, we’ll take a boat ride in search of nocturnal creatures.

2 – DAY:

We head out at dawn, the best time to spot wildlife, towards Sandoval Lake in the Tambopata National Reserve. The biodiversity here is striking.

To get to Sandoval Lake, we trek 3 km (1.8 miles) on a wooden path. This area teems with diverse fauna.

At the path’s end, we board a rowboat to explore Lake Sandoval. We might spot black caimans, giant otters, herons, turtles, monkeys, macaws, wild ducks, and more. We’ll head back to the lodge for lunch before noon.

In the afternoon, we visit a Matsigenka family. We’ll engage with them, learn about their culture, try archery, spinning, weaving, and rope-making. They’ll also demonstrate creating fire using only natural resources. Afterward, we return to the hotel to rest.

As evening sets, the jungle’s nightlife comes alive. With our flashlights, we’ll explore the trails, looking for nocturnal creatures like porcupines, sloths, arachnids, insects, reptiles, night monkeys, and owls.

After the tour, we head back to the hotel for dinner and sleep.

3 – DAY:

Launching our adventure at the break of dawn, we eagerly board our boat. Navigating upstream on the Madre de Dios River, we set course for “La Cachuela”, a renowned parrot and macaw clay lick. As we journey forward, the potential beauty of a sunrise awaits us.

Arriving at the clay lick, a kaleidoscope of macaws, parrots, and parakeets greet our eyes, and if we’re lucky, even a sloth or two. Notably, on an exceptional day, we might spot up to 7 different bird species. These birds are drawn here daily, lured by the mineral-rich clay which intriguingly aids their digestion. Absorbing this spectacle, we steer back to the hotel, looking forward to a wholesome breakfast.

Following breakfast, our curiosity leads us to a local farm. Here, we delve into the nuances of plant grafting and familiarize ourselves with diverse soil types. Additionally, we relish the opportunity to taste and examine traditional rainforest crops such as coffee, cocoa, and bananas. As the sun climbs high, we conclude our farm visit and head back to our resting place.

Rejuvenated by a lavish Amazonian lunch and a brief respite, anticipation builds for the next leg of our journey. We set forth on a hike that guides us to a tree that whispers tales from over 700 years ago. This venerable tree also marks the commencement of the hanging bridges, intricately woven between the trees. As we traverse these structures, the forest canopy unfolds its treasures, revealing the likes of toucans, hummingbirds, and even elusive monkeys.

4 – DAY:

After a restful night, we’re energized and ready for the day. Post-breakfast, we embark on a KAYAK adventure. We paddle along the Madre de Dios riverbanks, keeping an eye out for wildlife: endangered turtles, white caimans, kingfishers, herons, and if we’re lucky, anacondas. For safety, our guide provides us with life jackets. By noon, we’re back at the hotel.

As the sun sets, we head to the city. From there, a vehicle drives us to the captivating Lake Yacumama. This lake boasts remarkable scenic beauty and an unforgettable sunset. It’s a sanctuary for hundreds of macaws, parrots, and parakeets. Often, you can spot black caimans, herons, cormorants, wild ducks, swallows, four piranha species, and occasionally, a family of river otters.

At Lake Yacumama, we hop on a rowing boat and head to our regular piranha fishing spot. Fishing here is straightforward with small hooks. We photograph our catch and then release the piranhas, preserving the ecosystem. As night falls, we journey back to the hotel.
