TOUR SCHEDULE: SANDOVAL LAKE, COLPA CHUNCHO & YACUMAMA LAKE 5D/4N
TRANSPORTATION: We travel by car and boat.
ACTIVITIES: We’ll explore the Parrots and Macaw clay lick, visit a native family, go fishing, hike, ride paddle boats, take botanical walks, spot caimans, and enjoy night walks.
DIFFICULTY: The tour is mild in difficulty.
CLOTHING RECOMMENDATION: Avoid black clothing as it attracts mosquitoes. Opt for light and neutral colors like green, beige, brown, and gray. Bring insect repellent and sunscreen.
ESSENTIALS TO BRING: Carry flashlights, extra batteries, rain poncho, sunglasses, swimwear, hats, a medium-sized backpack, cameras, binoculars, sandals, some extra cash, and a water bottle.
We greet our travelers at the airport or bus station and transfer them to the Green Jungle Tours office for registration. Next, we drive for about an hour to the community of Filadelfia. From there, we boat upstream on the Tambopata River for 10 minutes to reach the hotel.
A guide will brief you on hotel policies before you check into your rooms.
Post lunch and a short rest, we embark on a two-hour walk in the dense tropical forest. An expert guide will lead the way, showcasing a variety of medicinal plants and ancient trees like the Brazil nut and tonka bean tree.
Along the trails and the 45-meter-high bird-watching tower, look out for wildlife such as monkeys, toucans, parrots, and more. Immerse yourself in the magic of the Tambopata National Reserve. We head back to the hotel around sunset.
Come night, we set out on our boat to observe nocturnal animals along the Tambopata River banks. Expect to spot caimans, owls, and hopefully, the large rodent, Capybara.
On a clear night, gaze at the Milky Way and shooting stars. We conclude the evening with a relaxing ecological walk before dinner.
DAY 2:
What better than tasting a cup of tea or coffee before starting our exciting journey to the macaw and parrot clay lick, at dawn we take the boat to navigate the Tambopata River for more than half an hour, on the way we could spot JAGUAR or ANACONDA, Already installed in the clay lick of parrots and macaws Chuncho we can observe the majestic spectacle of colors and sounds of these birds for more than three hours, while we are enchanted with this wonderful view of birds, at the same time we enjoy our country breakfast. Later in the morning we return and we go with our boat into the small branches of the Tambopata River in search of wildlife such as capybaras, tapirs, wild pigs, monkeys, caimans, turtles or cats, while enjoying the beautiful scenery that has the Tambopata National Reserve and its rivers.
In the afternoon we return to the city taking the same road that led us to the first hotel, back in the city we take a vehicle that will take us for about 15 minutes to Lake Yacumama, this lake has a lush scenic beauty and has the most impressive sunset in the region, This lake is also home to hundreds of macaws, parrots and parakeets, on many occasions you can observe black caimans, herons, cormorants, wild ducks, swallows, 4 varieties of piranhas and with a lot of luck a family of river otters. In this tour of Lake Yacumama we will use a small rowing boat that will take us to the point where we usually fish piranhas, which in turn is very easy to do with small hooks, piranha that we catch we take a picture with it and then return it to its aquiferous environment, so as not to diminish the food source of the animals that fish. Almost at dusk we head to the pier where we will take our boat to reach our hotel and finally take a pleasant rest.
DAY 3:
One of the best times to see abundant wildlife is at sunrise or sunset in our case we choose to leave at dawn in our boat heading to Sandoval Lake located within the Tambopata National Reserve, witness the exuberant biodiversity that has the Sandoval Lake is simply incomparable, to reach the Sandoval Lake we walk along a wooden path of almost 3 km (1.8 miles). Along the walk we are always surprised by the rich fauna that this place has, at the end of the trail we find a small dock where we take a rowboat to make our tour of Lake Sandoval in this journey we can see black caimans, giant otters, herons, turtles, monkeys, macaws, wild ducks, and much more, we return to the lodge before noon for our lunch.
In the afternoon we leave to visit a family of natives belonging to the “Matsigenka” culture where we will interact with them learning part of their culture, we will learn to use bows and arrows, to spin and weave cotton to make their clothing called (Cushma), they also teach us to make ropes using the bark of plants and finally show us their ingenuity to make fire just using nature, at sunset we return to our hotel.
At dusk the jungle begins to offer us a majestic night life, very different from the usual day life, for this tour we will have to go out with our flashlights and we will go into the trails in search of nocturnal wildlife such as porcupines, sloths, arachnids, insects, reptiles, opossums, night monkeys, owls, among others. We return to the hotel for dinner and then rest.
DAY 4:
After a rich breakfast and a good rest, we will visit the monkey island located in the middle of the Madre de Dios River a couple of minutes from our hotel, there are different species of monkeys, even a hybrid species of capuchin monkey, we can also feed them with fruits of the region and with luck we could also spot sloths and turtles, we return to the hotel before noon.
In the afternoon after a short siesta, we will walk along a trail talking about giant trees until we reach one of them with more than 700 years old, right there begin at the same time the hanging bridges that are installed between the trees, there you will witness the rich fauna that has this level of the forest called “canopy” while walking along the bridges you might see toucans, hummingbirds, woodpeckers, monkeys, lizards, orchids, epiphytes plants and many things more.
We continue enjoying our well-deserved vacation, this time we go out to venture into the KAYAK boats, this tour consists of paddling near the banks of the Madre de Dios River in order to look for more wildlife such as endangered turtles, white caimans, kingfishers, herons and with some luck anaconda. For this adrenaline adventure we must wear life jackets that the guide in charge will provide.
DAY 5:
OPTIONAL EXCURSION
After a pleasant night and a good breakfast, as a last excursion we go to visit a farm (local crops) where we will learn to graft plants and see soil types, we can also taste and see typical plantations of the rainforest, such as coffee, different types of cocoa, citrus, ingas, bananas, among others. We return to the hotel around noon.
Later in the morning we return to the city to pick up the luggage in case you have left it in the office, then we go to the airport or if you have bus ticket we go to the bus station.
